Final Exam
Here is the formula sheet that will be provided with the final exam (you do not need to print it). If you think there is an equation that you need to know that is not on the formula sheet, then you need to memorize it.

You can use any calculator that cannot go online or communicate wirelessly with other devices. Graphing calculators are fine.

A past final and practice final from 2013 (and their solutions) are available at the bottom of this page.

9.1 - 9.5,
10.1 - 10.3

Here is the formula sheet that you may use during the quiz. If you think there is an equation that you need to know that is not on the formula sheet, then you need to memorize it.

You can use any calculator that cannot go online or communicate wirelessly with other devices. Graphing calculators are fine.

The quiz must be completed independently. Anyone caught communicating with another person (in any form) or making use of any online resources, during the quiz will receive an automatic zero and the case will be referred to the Dean's office.

Mar. 5:

Jan. 28:
Quiz #1
I have created a Zoom link for Quiz #1. The link is available in the PHYS 121 Canvas shell (click on "Zoom" in the menu along the left-hand side of page). You do NOT need to join the Zoom session during the quiz. It is made available only if a question arises. If you do have a question, send me a direct message using the chat. I will respond with a direct message back to you as soon as I can. I will not have my speakers on and I will not be using a microphone or video.

For anyone registered with the DRC, your extra time has been programmed into the practice quiz on PrairieLearn. If you have extra time in the practice quiz, you will also have it for the quiz on Wednesday.

Jan. 24:
Reading Assignment
Read and study Sections 7.1 to 7.5 (inclusive) of OSUPv2.
Jan. 20:
Quiz #1
The first quiz will be during class on Wednesday, January 29. The quiz will be in PrairieLearn. It will be 10 to 12 multiple choice questions. You will have 40 minutes to complete the quiz.

It will cover material from:

Chapter 5 of OSUPv2.
Sections 5.1 to 5.6 inclusive

The Quiz will also cover the simple pendulum. See The Period and Frequency of a Mass on a Spring section from 15.1 and The Simple Pendulum section from 15.4 of volume 1 of the OSUP textbook.

Anyone caught communicating with another person, in any form, during the quiz will receive an automatic zero and the case will be referred to the Dean's office.

Quiz #1 and its solutions from the W2019 offering of PHYS 121 are available at the bottom of this page. There is also a practice quiz in PrairieLearn that you can try.

The quiz will be conducted online using the PrairieLearn platform. You do NOT need to come ART 366 for the quiz on January 29. Find a place to complete the quiz online. You must complete the quiz indepedently. If you wish, you can come to ART 366 to write the quiz, but you must bring a device (laptop or tablet) that you can use to complete the online quiz using the PrairieLearn platform.

The quiz will become available on PairieLearn at 10:00 on January 29. To have the full allotted time for the quiz, you must begin the quiz within 10 minutes of the 10:00 start time.

During the quiz, if you wish, you will be able to go back to previous questions to check and/or change your answers.

Jan. 17:
Reading Assignment
Read and study chapter 6 of OSUPv2.
Hands-on project: In PHYS 121, there is an opportunity to earn up to 3 bonus marks towards your final grade by completing an indepednet hands-on project related to the course material. Although we will not supply you with lab space or equipment, you may consider taking advantage of the UBCO Makerspace.

To be eligible for the bonus marks, you must:
- email me a short description of your idea no later than 23:59 on Feb. 10.
- provide me with a YouTube link to a video in which you demonstrate your apparatus and explain the relevant physics. This YouTube link will be shared with the class through the PHYS 121 Canvas shell. The YouTube link needs to be sent to me no later than 23:59 on Monday, April 7.

The number of bonus marks received will depend on the quality of both the hands-on project demonstrated and the explanation of the physics. You may complete the optional hands-on project individually or as a team of two. If working with a partner, each member of the team must make substantial contributions to the project.

HW1: The first PrairieLearn homework assignment is now available!

The due date is Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 23:59.

Log in to the PHYS 121 Canvas page for a link to the PHYS 121 PrairieLearn page.

Survey: All PHYS 121 students are required to complete an online survey. The survey takes only about 10 minutes to complete.

After the start of term-2, log in to the PHYS 121 Canvas page to find a link to the survey.

Please complete the survey by Monday, Jan. 13 at 23:59.

You will received a credit of 0.5 marks towards your final grade after completing the survey.

Calculus: Here are some calculus review exercises (with answers). You should be able to do the differentiation exercises. You'll acquire to skills to do the integration exercises as you progress through MATH 101.
Studying Strategy: Review your notes to get a basic grasp of the concepts covered. Read and understand all steps of the worked Example problems in the textbook. Then close your book and solve the problems on your own. If you get stuck, go back to the book to get unstuck. Repeat this process until you can confidently solve the problems without referring to the solutions in the book.

This process is time consuming, but it'll definitely expose which concepts you are conformatable with and those that you need to review.

Review the PrairieLearn homework problems. Especially the ones that you initially got wrong. The goal is not only to get the right answer, but also to understand each step that leads you to the correct answer.

Try the practice problems in the OpenStax University Physics volume 2 book. Do as many as you possibly can. You learn physics by doing physics, not by watching someone else do it! The answers to the odd-numbered problems are given at the back of the book.

Finally, try the past midterms and final exams posted at the bottom of this page.

Midterm: The will be one midterm in PHYS 121. It will be written during regular class time and in the usual class room. The midterm is scheduled for:
