Final exam
We didn't cover the topics needed to do question #6 on the 2014 final exam and question #8 on the 2015 final exam at the bottom of this page. You won't be asked this type of question on this year's final exam.
Mar. 28:
Formula Sheet & Calculator
You can prepare your own formula sheet for the final exam. You can bring one 8.5" x 11" letter-sized piece of paper to the exam with anything written or printed on it. You can use both sides of the paper.

You can bring any calculator that cannot go online or wirelessly communicate with another device. Graphing calculators are fine.

Mar. 21:
Assignment #6

Jan. 30:
Brownian Motion Sim.
Links to the Brownian motion simulations that will be shown in class.

This first simulation attempts to model the diffusion of particles injected at a point in a solution.

- Here's a link to the ipynb file and here's a link to an html copy of the notebook.
- Here's a link that will open the .ipynb file in UBC's Open Jupyter hub.

This second simulation attempts to model the settling of particles suspended in a solutions. The particles settle due to gravity.

- Here's a link to the ipynb file and here's a link to an html copy of the notebook.
- Here's a link that will open the .ipynb file in UBC's Open Jupyter hub.

Jan. 25:
Assignment #2
Random walk:
Assignment #2
Due Friday, Feb. 7 @ 09:00
Jan. 25:
Dice game
Here is a Python simulation of the dice game discussed in the lecture:

- Jupyter notebook (ipynb)
- html
- pdf

The simulation looks that repeated trials and tracks the profit/loss of players.

Recommended Reading: Kaloyerou - Chapter 5
Jan. 17:
Bessel's Correction
Some notes on Bessel's Correction (.pdf).
(Why N-1 in the standard deviation of a sample population?)
Jan. 15:
Assignment #1
Fourier Series:
Assignment #1
Due Friday, Jan. 24 @ 09:00
Jan. 15:
Fourier Series
Here is the Jupyter notebook that will be shown in class. It shows how a superposition of sinusoidal functions can be used to construct a square wave. Here is an html copy of the Jupyter notebook.
Calculus Review: Here is a little review exercise of basic calculus. This is not an assignment to be handed in, but you should be comfortable with all of the problems in this exercise. If you're not, you should review the concepts that you find challenging.
Recommended Reading: Kaloyerou - Chapters 1 & 2
Formal Report: The formal report is due at the start of the last lecture:

Monday, April 7 at 14:00 in SCI 241 - no exceptions.

For information about the formal report format and marking guidelines see the entries below.

Formal Marking Scheme: Here is a general formal report marking scheme.

The total maximum length of the formal report is 8 pages. This includes cover sheet, figures, references, ...

Note that you do not have to follow the suggested format exactly. Organize your formal report in the way that you find most suitable.

Sample Formal Report: Here is a sample formal report from SFU.
Laboratory Safety (.pdf): Read the following short document before coming to the first laboratory: Safety Guidelines
