22C:244 Database System Implementation
Spring 2006 - University of Iowa
Overview
The fourth offering of 22C:244 Database System Implementation was offered in Spring 2006. Overall, the class went well as
most material was similar to the previous year. The course was small (12 students), but 4 of those students were taking it
remotely via taped lectures distributed over the Internet. 10 of the 12 students has just completed 144 in the Fall and
decided to take 244 in the Spring. The course involved homework and programming assignments, a midterm exam, a final exam,
and a major project. Most students did very well, and many created interesting projects. An enormous amount of time was
given for the midterm and final exam.
The class was in 112 Macbride Hall from 2:30-5:00 p.m. Wednesdays.

Comments
This was a good class despite some missed classes and shortened office hours due to my travel.
What Students Liked Most About the Course
- "Well organized, clear presentation. I ask 1000 questions a day, and he fields them all graciously.
This and 144 were two of my favorite courses. Thanks and good luck."
- "The concepts covered were especially interesting. I also really liked the homework assignments that
dealt with programming. Learning about random access files turned out to be really useful for me. Overall
this was a good course and I am glad I took it."
- "The class notes. When the tornado was going to hit they're the 2nd thing I put in my backpack (the
1st was my iPod; can't ride a tornado without music!)"
What Students Liked Least About the Course
- "One to many homework assignments. I think the final exam should account for less of the grade.
Instead the project should be worth more. I feel that I invested the most time and effort into the project
and my grade should reflect that."
- "The multiple choice on the exams ; whatever happened to gimmie questions. Early assignments were
pretty labor intensive ; I like coding just not that much at once."
